Ibiza

Famous for its relaxed vibe by day and high energy life by night, Ibiza is a wonder of color and spirit.

Famous for its relaxed vibe by day and high energy life by night, Ibiza is a wonder of color and spirit.

Enjoy the many facets of the White Isle including: watching the famous Ibiza sunsets, boarding a boat, spending time in Dalt Vila, taking a long and lazy beach lunch, riding the waves at Surf Lounge, browsing the Las Dalias Hippy Market, or lounging on a daybed at Nikki Beach Ibiza.

A multicultural past has turned this tiny island into a cosmopolitan hub, while retaining much of its authentic rural essence. Ibiza has a magical soul that goes much deeper than the world-famous nightclubs it is known for.

With breathtaking coastal and countryside landscapes and a rich and varied history, there’s a far quieter side to the beautiful and small Spanish island of Ibiza.

In 1999, UNESCO recognized Ibiza as a cultural gem and Dalt Vila, also known as Old Town, was declared as a world heritage site.

When Ibiza was an important trading port in the eighth century BC, the Balearic island, formerly known as Ibosim, the island of the god Bed, was invaded by Romans, Arabs and Byzantines, among others.

The history of Ibiza and Formentera is a cultural blend. The Pitiuses, habitual residents, received visitors from all over the Mediterranean which can still be observed today through the diversity of tourists.

Prehistoric tombs, rock paintings and utensils have been found burning in the island’s soil and the pine trees that guided the Greeks to shore in 700 BC still dominate the land today. It was these travelers who named the island “Pitiusas,” meaning the pine island.

However, it was the 1960s that brought the hippies who began to colonize Ibiza and set creative roots. Following the death of General Franco in 1975, Ibiza was returned to a Catalan speaking territory and the popularity of the island continued to grow. It soon became a major European holiday destination and, as a result, development soared. In 1999, UNESCO recognized Ibiza as a cultural gem, and Dalt Vila (Old Town) was declared a world heritage site.

Discovery

ABOVE:

You say Ibiza. The correct pronunciation of the island’s name is ‘Evissa’. The settlers who founded the island originally named it ‘Ibozzim’ and dedicated the island to Bes, the god of music and dance.

For slower-paced Balearic island vibes, Ibiza can offer winding country roads, whitewashed hamlets, secluded crescent coves, wild orchids and much more. Most of the regions famous beaches and main towns are located in the south and west. However, beyond the southern borders, in the east and north, life tends to run on a slower pace.

Follow the roads, past the city life and head towards the east coast, home to Nikki Beach Ibiza. Explore serene and beautiful beaches, quaint villages and stunning scenery.

Catch a sunrise over Es Vedra, an iconic 400m high rock that soars just from the sea for one of the island’s most magical sights.

For those feeling adventurous, try kayaking around the island’s 200km shoreline. This week long trip is offered by guided tours. For a shorter adventure, many beaches offer the perfect destination for a visit by boat. The rich marine life attracts divers, while the island’s magnificent lakes and shimmering salt flats are popular with both peregrine falcons and beautiful flamingos.
